20 Amazing Buns for Bad Hair Days

We all have those days when our hair is just IN THE WAY.  It gets caught inside your winter jacket.   It gets snagged by the strap of your purse.  It sticks to your lip gloss.  It scratches your neck. It won't stay behind your ears.  You say you want to shave your head or chop it all off.  Now, of course you don't mean that, but somehow saying it alleviates some frustration. Right?  That is usually when you grab a trusty hair binder and "throw it up."  You know, when you hastily pull it onto the top of your head and call it done?  Here is some inspiration for your next "I-want-to-chop-my-hair-off"day.

I'd love to see how to do this with really curly hair... buns like these don't look good with tight curls like mine..

Make it into a messy bun! I have really curly hair as well and i put it in a messy bun and put in a headband and it turns out really cute!! You should try it!!

I have really curly hair too, and the sad truth of the matter is that if you don't straighten or blow out your hair most of these buns don't work. But if when your hair is curly you put it up in a top knot bun it looks very pretty/elegant. I usally do a pony tail at the very top of my head, but only wrap the hair bow twice so its secure but loose. Then just use some hair pins to keep the bun from moving around and nicely curl any baby hairs or fly away with watered down gel.

p.s. it may be best to do this hair style when your hair is damp and the curls are defined.

      Hope this helps!

It also helps if you take a chunk of hair and twist it with your finger a few times before you put it up in a bun, this helps hold it in better and give it a more "bun" look.

I scrunch my hair in the same way like when I am applying mousse or gel and instead of letting go, pile your hair and wrap a pony around the top. It seems to work best after my hair is diffused.

I also have pretty curly hair and while I usually love it..it can drive me insane :P
I try to never blow dry or straighten my hair but love buns and thankfully some genius came up with SPIN PINS. I can create a really cute messy bun with them no elastics or bobby pins needed. I still do use an elastic sometimes but the pins let me make variations. I can make the buns messier, larger, or in a wacky curly messy french twist kinda thing. I have curly hair to my waist so I use anywhere from 2-5 spin pins so that gives more options as well

Also my hair takes shapes very easliy so I can often pull it back tightly at night into a pony, and as it drys it goes a bit straighter (comparatively lol) so that I can try styles similar to some of the above, but that is thinking the night ahead.

with curly hair it might be better to put your hair in a top knot while your is wet, but i think curly/messy top knots are cute!;)

I just got my curly (curly as in tight, frizzy, half-straight mess) hair trimmed in layers to a little below my shoulders. I try to attempt to put my hair in a top-knot bun. However, the bun tends to become so tiny and weird-looking. I might consider purchasing spin pins... if they truly do work. So, any tips, guys?

    9. Spin pins DO work, but I think that depends on how much hair you have! Like, if you don't have long or thick hair, the pins might poke out a little bit. Worth a try, though!

I have shorter hair that is only about 2 to 3 inches past the tops of my shoulders and sometimes it's hard to pull it up into cute buns, do any of these buns work with shorter hair like mine?

Ps. My hair is also kinda thin, not much but just a little, would that work with these to?

I will twist my bangs and front portion of my hair and pin it back..then put a hair clip in the back..it's cute but I need something different. ..bored

I feel you girls! My hair is a similar length and very thin, and I have a weird shaped head! Lol the top knot works for me when my hair had some texture to it. My best bet is normally a messy bun. It makes it look more full.

  7. ^ ^ Just pull your hair up high like in a high ponytail, twist and secure. There's other ways too like braiding then twisting. hope this help (its hard to explain in words without pictures)

For my curly haired sisters - try chop sticks with your bun! The twisty motion tends to pull the curl in while also leaving cute whisps. Also, pin the curls up with your bun at the back, it gives a very elegant look by itself or pair with a head band to make it more casual. :)

I have very long hair as well--over 2 feet! It's also layered and really thick. For a messy bun I gather it into a ponytail and wrap the elastic around once, on the second turn I grab all the hair so it's doubled up. If you leave it like this you'll have a kind of 'bubble' with the rest hanging down. I continue and wrap it a third time. Because of the layers and sheer volume I still have a lot of hair left not in the bun so I twist it and stick it in and under the elastic until its all up. I also do a very very lazy bun by twisting it all on top on my head like the traditional donut-twist bun, however mine is more like a tower than a flat ring. With the elastic around twice it stays in for a good few hours. Experimentation is the key, not everyone can do the same hairstyle. You've got to find a lazy day and just try a million different bun styles and YouTube videos until you figure out something that works. :)

With my curly hair I have found that towel drying it, then using a pick(helps with tangles & frizzing) then spraying Aussie Freeze aerosol hair spray on, scrunching & working it through my hair(finger combing like), works great. I can do about anything with it after, I usually let it air dry, or put it in a messy bun.

My hair is very frizzy from root to tip and whenever I try and put my hair up I always look like I've been hit by a train because the underneath hair is so frizzy! I hairspray and moose it but the people in the pictures, their hair is straight at the roots and sits nicely unlike mine ): HAALPP MEHH

All these buns are gorgeous on the girls wearing them, and in fact I am jealous of how easy and pretty they are. When I try a messy bun, or any bun in general it fails. I have rater long hair an it is quite thick and rarely ever manageable. It's not that my hair is curly, it's just awkwardly wavy and whenever I try a bun it either looks like a super tight ballerina bun and not messy at all or I just look like princess Leah from star wars. Any advice?

The secret to having a bun that has the perfect 'messy' look, is to leave out the front 2-ish inches and you can either back comb those layers and/or pin it up in a pompoudaor and pin it into the bun then gently pull a few small sections of your hair up all around the bun just a little to give it that loose voluminous look we all love :)

My daughter has waist length, semi -wavy, super tangly and unruly hair...and a very sensitive head. Top "buns" are our go to when we can't get all the knots out and ruining late. I use a soft bristle brush (or sometimes just finger comb it) in a high pony. Start wrapping an elastic but in the last twist, pull the hair only half out so it creates a "pony bun" ....then just start pinning like crazy. I do it fast and messy. If there are bumps and lumps, just finger comb, spray with hair spray, and pin. We put in a headband or big flower and she looks adorable! It's really fast... Seriously! The trick is lots of bobby pins and don't try to be too perfect! (I do this on myself as well)
